The Benefits Of Acerola Powder Extract
To talk about Acerola powder, we need to talk about cherries.
Although let’s get one thing straight first, the Acerola ‘cherries’ that Acerola powder extract is derived from aren’t the same as regular cherries.
Bear with me here.
Acerola cherries are a cherry-like fruit produced by a small shrub native to Central America, South America and Mexico.
The shrub is actually unrelated to the common cherry tree - although some of its names include West Indian cherry and Barbados cherry. It’s also sometimes called wild crepe myrtle, and the botanical name for the Acerola plant is Malpighia emarginata.
Acerola cherries can be eaten in the same way as normal cherries, although they have a distinctly sour flavour. This is due to their extremely high vitamin C content - one of the highest of any fruit!
You’ve probably heard about many different sources of vitamin C, and it’s true there are a lot around. However, rather than providing many sources in Athletic Greens, we’ve chosen one SUPERcharged potent source: Acerola powder.
It’s definitely a key reason to include Acerola powder in Athletic Greens, but you’ll soon understand that as well as being a vitamin C wonder-kid, Acerola powder has an impressive array of complementary nutrients.
Acerola Powder Is Packed With Vitamins
For sure, Acerola powder is most famous for its vitamin C content, so let’s talk about that first.
Most people get enough vitamin C to cover basic requirements. But because it’s a water soluble vitamin - dissolving upon entering your body - you can’t store excess amounts for later use.
Let’s take a quick sidestep here:
Vitamins are fascinating. There’s two main categories we’re interested in: Fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. Vitamins that are fat-soluble are stored by the body in its tissues. Because of this it is possible (although not particularly common) for the body to store too much from these vitamins. You’d have to take a bucket-load though.
Fat-soluble essential vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Water-soluble vitamins, as I mentioned above, are soluble in water so aren’t stored in the body’s tissues like fat-soluble vitamins. Most of the water-soluble vitamins you might take are processed and excreted. Common water-soluble vitamins include all the B vitamins and vitamin C.
What’s the takeaway from this little sidestep? It’s hard to have too much vitamin C.
Plus there are many benefits to be had when you get it at higher doses; benefits that most people miss out on. Fortunately, if you’re taking your daily Athletic Greens, you’re getting all of these.
You may not know that synthetic and natural forms of vitamins have a different impact. Plant sources of vitamins tend to have a higher absorption rate compared to synthetic supplements.
With vitamin C, this is because synthetic forms offer an isolated form of ascorbic acid, while natural forms of contain a spectrum of synergistic compounds which increase absorption and effect.
For this reason it makes perfect sense to look to natural sources to get the full range of benefits. On top of this, the bioavailability of synthetic vitamin C has recently come into question, so that’s an extra incentive for us to include natural sources in Athletic Greens.
Acerola cherry offers a range of other vitamins including A, B, B1, B2 and B3. Like many fruits, colorful pigments that promote good health such anthocyanins and carotenoids are also present.
The Benefits That Acerola Powder Can Offer You
The unique combination of vitamins and beneficial plant compounds that I talked about above point to a bunch of potential benefits of Acerola powder.
Here are a few:
→ Enhanced immune function
Vitamin C is crucial for the production of healthy white blood cells. It’s believed to support and strengthen the immune system.
→ Improved skin health
Vitamin C is necessary for collagen synthesis, so Acerola powder is commonly taken to help improve skin quality through better collagen formation. It also helps wounds heal faster and helps with quicker recovery from illness.
→ Anti-ageing benefits
Thanks to its help with collagen formation, Acerola powder can help with signs of ageing like appearance, cognition, degenerative disease and cancer prevention.
→ Strong antioxidant activity
Acerola’s phytochemical compounds have been shown to scavenge free radicals.
→ Cancer prevention and support
Acerola may help with cancer prevention by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation.
That’s not all! It’s also believed that Acerola cherry may also support:
✔ Cardiovascular function
✔ Seasonal allergies
✔ Healthy metabolism and weight loss
✔ Decreased symptoms and severity of the common cold
✔ Improved energy levels
How To Enjoy Acerola Powder Benefits
There is no standard dose for Acerola cherry, and recommendations vary based on age, weight and health condition.
Acerola powder is generally considered safe, though the high vitamin C content may cause gastric distress and/or diarrhea when taken in excess.
Caution is also advised for those taking blood thinning or hormone medications, as well as patients with gout or kidney stones (which can be aggravated by vitamin C).
Acerola powder works well with other Athletic Greens ingredients.
As with all of the ingredients in Athletic Greens, we’ve carefully selected Acerola powder not just because of all the benefits it offers, but also because of how it works with the other ingredients in our superfood mix.
Acerola powder goes pretty nicely with citrus bioflavonoids. These may increase the absorption of vitamin C, and both work hard to help strengthen the immune system and provide anti-inflammatory benefits.
It also goes well with Grape Seed Extract. This is another natural source of vitamin C, and together they can improve skin quality through better collagen formation.
Like many natural remedies, the health benefits of Acerola cherry lack adequate scientific consensus to date…but, (and it’s a big but!), the high content of natural vitamin C plus beneficial nutrients and plant compounds offer vital clues (and preliminary good signs for) its role in healthy ageing, immune function, disease prevention and general wellbeing.
So here we have a small, potent power-fruit that punches well above its weight when it comes to giving you key vitamin benefits.
Acerola powder has all the credibility of vitamin C as that is the core active component. So you can look forward to an improved immune system, improved skin due to enhanced ability to produce collagen, and improved energy levels. What are you waiting for!?
