To talk about Acerola powder, we need to talk about cherries.

Although let’s get one thing straight first, the Acerola ‘cherries’ that Acerola powder extract is derived from aren’t the same as regular cherries.

Bear with me here.

Acerola cherries are a cherry-like fruit produced by a small shrub native to Central America, South America and Mexico.

The shrub is actually unrelated to the common cherry tree - although some of its names include West Indian cherry and Barbados cherry. It’s also sometimes called wild crepe myrtle, and the botanical name for the Acerola plant is Malpighia emarginata.

Acerola cherries can be eaten in the same way as normal cherries, although they have a distinctly sour flavour. This is due to their extremely high vitamin C content - one of the highest of any fruit!

You’ve probably heard about many different sources of vitamin C, and it’s true there are a lot around. However, rather than providing many sources in Athletic Greens, we’ve chosen one SUPERcharged potent source: Acerola powder.

For sure, Acerola powder is most famous for its vitamin C content, so let’s talk about that first.

Most people get enough vitamin C to cover basic requirements. But because it’s a water soluble vitamin - dissolving upon entering your body - you can’t store excess amounts for later use.

Vitamins are fascinating. There’s two main categories we’re interested in: Fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins. Vitamins that are fat-soluble are stored by the body in its tissues. Water-soluble vitamins, as I mentioned above, are soluble in water so aren’t stored in the body’s tissues like fat-soluble vitamins. Most of the water-soluble vitamins you might take are processed and excreted. Common water-soluble vitamins include all the B vitamins and vitamin C.

What’s the takeaway from this little sidestep? It’s hard to have too much vitamin C.

Plus there are many benefits to be had when you get it at higher doses; benefits that most people miss out on. Fortunately, if you’re taking your daily Athletic Greens, you’re getting all of these.

You may not know that synthetic and natural forms of vitamins have a different impact. Plant sources of vitamins tend to have a higher absorption rate compared to synthetic supplements.

Caution is also advised for those taking blood thinning or hormone medications, as well as patients with gout or kidney stones (which can be aggravated by vitamin C).
